New Program from MFS: Movie Nite!

The Memphis Film Society is proud to roll out our newest ongoing program: Movie Nite! So what is Movie Nite!? We're glad you asked!

Each month we will feature a locally produced feature film in an atmosphere where you, the movie-goer, can watch the movie, socialize with others in the Memphis film scene, and enjoy food and drinks with your entertainment! And since the movies will always be locally produced films, you will also get the chance to enjoy a Q&A with local filmmakers to ask about the production, get advice for your own film project, and even (at times) purchase the actual movie. All of this is done in a casual environment that supports watching the film, as well as provides an area for those who are more interested in socializing with others in the film scene--and, best of all, the event is completely FREE!

For filmmakers with a finished project, Movie Nite! means even more. It means having a venue to screen your finished movie for a local audience (not to mention your cast and crew), as well as an opportunity to use the occasion as a 'test screening' to gather useful information about your film prior to the final edit. Doing this will prevent jeopardizing the precious 'premier status' of the movie, as well as give you the opportunity to tweak some changes in the edit prior to sending your movie out to film festivals. Our first ever Movie Nite! is happening this month and will feature the locally produced movie At Stake: Vampire Solutions. Producer/director Jim Weter will be on hand for the screening, along with other key production personnel, and he will also be talking about the upcoming sequel to the movie (which will be casting very soon), as well as the ongoing Cellardoor Cinema screenplay competition that will be kicking off in the near future. This event is sponsored by Sky Grille, a new locally owned venue that offers two floors of fun, great music, and even better food and drink. Indie Memphis Film Festival - Preview

So tomorrow kicks off the 14th round of the Indie Memphis Film Festival and (as always) we are excited! This year's event will feature an array of new and celebrated feature films (some of them locally produced), informative panels, and a series of shorts programs that will appeal to everyone.

After perusing the schedule for the festival, I thought it would be worth the time to note the daily highlights that we will be tuning into--and hopefully illustrate to all of you why you, too, need to hit this year's event!

Thursday, November 3:

7:00 pm, These Amazing Shadows. This documentary takes a closer look at what makes the cut for film at the Library of Congress. It's a fascinating subject that's highlighted with interviews with people like John Waters and John Singleton.

9:15 pm, Taxi Driver. If you've never seen this Robert DeNiro classic on the big screen, you haven't seen it. Thanks to Indie Memphis this is your chance!

Friday, November 4:

11:00 am, The Interrupters. This documentary focuses on ex-gang members in Chicago who actively stop crimes from happening--at the moment they are about to happen! Interesting and edgy, this is a great flick to catch at the Brooks Museum of Art.

7:00 pm, This is What Love in Action Looks Like. This locally produced documentary has already been tearing up the festival circuit. Catch this movie with the filmmaker in attendance.

9:30 pm, Short Films #2: Hometowner. Support local filmmakers' efforts by seeing their short films on the big screen. Hey, it could be your movie next year!

Saturday, November 5:

11:30 am, Eleanor's Secret. This French animated feature is already a festival favorite and has even garnered Oscar attention.

12:45 pm, Screenwriting Panel. Learn the art of screenwriting and get advice from local luminary Craig Brewer and acclaimed screenwriter Daniel Waters (Heathers, Batman Returns).

4:45 pm, Jeff, Who Lives at Home. Catch the newest film from Mumblecore pioneers the Duplass Brothers (The Puffy Chair, Baghead, Cyrus). It's sure to be a highlight of the day.

7:00 pm, Losers Take All. Another locally produced movie--this one is a comedy that surrounds the fictitious band The Fingers. Filmmakers will be in attendance.

10:00 pm, Better Than Something: Jay Reatard. This documentary follows the life of the local rock legend and is sure to make you want to hit the Hi Tone this weekend.

Sunday, November 6:

12:00 pm, Melancholia. The latest from auteur Lars von Trier, this film is sure to keep you guessing and writhing in your seat since it features a frayed family waiting for the end of the world! This looks to be an early favorite for best film in the festival.

3:00 pm, Documentary Filmmaking. This conversation features Bruce Sinofsky (the documentarian who has been following the Memphis Three) and Robert Gordon. Listen in and learn the ins-and-outs of this form of filmmaking.

Redemption Road - Free Advance Screening

Filmmaker Expo Schduled--A Must Attend Event

In lieu of a regular mixer in August (let's face it, it's pretty dang hot to be standing around outside in a beer garden right now), the Memphis Film Society is encouraging everyone to attend the Fuel Film Filmmakers Media Expo. It will be a great opportunity for local actors and crew to check out production companies who work in the Memphis area--and a great way for directors and producers to round up some headshots and meet crew for their next project. Here is the official description of the event from Fuel Film:

Cast your actors – Cast your crew. Calling all filmmakers, screenwriters, technical crew, actors, producers, directors, PA’s — this is your event! FuelFilm Memphis presents the Mid-South’s largest Filmmaking and Media Trade Show. Join us in the newly renovated/expanded Sky Grille, easily accessible in MidTown Memphis, and share an afternoon with like-minded professionals. (This event combines June’s rescheduled “Cast Your Crew” and August’s “Break Some Legs”.)

The cost is $10 per person you want to attend, so keep that in mind as well (each person for your production company needs to register separately). Films Announced for On Location: Memphis Festival

On Location: Memphis has just announced the lineup for this year's film festival to be held April 7-10 at the Malco Ridgeway 4 theatre. Festival passes (as well as individual tickets for films) will be sold on the official website (www.onlocationmemphis.org). According to the festival's press release, this year's event will include "more unique presentations, a senior film event, a Bollywood event, a Kids First screening, increased presence of music, networking events for musicians and filmmakers, and other surprises." And, of course, there will be the screening of this year's Fuel Film 48 Hour Film Launch creations. Without further ado, here's this year's lineup...

Feature Films: In the Key of Eli, A Lonely Place for Dying, Four Roses, Breaking Point (featuring Tom Berenger who will be in attendance), Regressa, and The Wayshower.

Documentaries: Better Than Something: Jay Reatard, Blaze Foley: Duct Tape Messiah, Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, Finding Kind, Love & Valor - The Intimate Civil War Letters, One Revolution, Stephen Faulkner: J'M'en vas Reviendre, and The Last Elephants in Thailand.

There will also be short film programs, student programs, and a few special screenings and presentations that include the film Win Win (featuring Paul Giamatti) and the newest outing from University of Memphis filmmaker Steven J. Ross titled Dancing on a Volcano. See you there!

Casting Call: Evergreen -- And New News!

Casting for the movie Evergreen will be going down in February and March. The casting call will focus on multiple roles/characters--one that probably fits even you! The film is produced by Jenny Kim and written/directed by Jackson K. Segar, though you will be wanting to contact the casting director, Melanie L. Addington if you are interested. What's the movie about? A quick story line:

Daniel must deal with the departure of his girlfriend Addy while struggling with issues with his aging father, the patriarch of the family farm, who tasks Daniel with firing an old friend and farmhand.

Roles to be cast include Jefferson Ames (caucasian male, 50-75), Daniel Ames (caucasian male, 16-26), Dalton Ames (caucasian male, 9-14), Riley Williams (African American male, 50-75), Mylan Williams (African American male, 9-14), Jason Tubbs (caucasian male, 18-32), and Addy Thompson (caucasian female, 17-25). If you fit one of these descriptions, send along a headshot/resume to Melanie
(melanie.addington@gmail.com) by February 12. Auditions will take place Feb. 19 & 26 in Oxford, MS and on March 5 in Sardis, MS. Shooting will take place in Como, Mississippi and compensation includes housing and meals.

Current News

The Memphis Film Society is featured on the Live From Memphis website. Check out the article and read about our last mixer that featured talent agent Lisa Lax. There's also a brief Q&A with me (Rich Newman) as well as some information about what we are trying to do in the coming year (in addition to hosting monthly mixers).

Be sure to save the date: Friday, Jan. 28. Why? Live From Memphis is having its 10th Anniversary party. It starts at 7pm at the LFM Studio space (1 South Main) and will feature free food and beverages, live DJ's, and an award ceremony. Not to mention it's another opportunity to mix it up with the Memphis independent film scene! More information is available on their Facebook event page.

In addition to the anniversary party, Live From Memphis is also now accepting entries for their Music Video Showcase. There will be awards for winning entries and the videos will be screened in front of a live audience. They are accepting applications until January 31 and the screening is scheduled for the weekend of March 12. More details, as well as the online application can be downloaded here.

Cellardoor Cinema is now hosting their second screenplay contest. Entries are accepted through Withoutabox and the winner will get his/her script produced into a movie. Shorts and features are both being accepted--and you will want to get your submission in by March 15 (at that point the price goes up from $15 to $20). Behind the Scenes: At Stake: Vampire Solutions

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the set of the Memphis-shot feature film At Stake: Vampire Solutions. Produced by Cellardoor Cinema (www.cellardoorcinema.com), the film is helmed by director Jason Weter, written by local special effects guru Duane P. Craig, and features a local cast and crew (the film stars Joshua Brunson, Anastasia Gale, Michael Goff, Jerry Kimble and Carl Pfeiffer).

AS:VS (as it's known on set) is a film about a group of Southern vampire killers who are more than ready to rid you of your fanged pests. In addition to shooting the movie, the producers decided to go viral with an early marketing campaign for the film by setting up a mock website for the vampire hunters, including a hotline for the afflicted to call.

Shooting for the film began on November 20th and will continue throughout the months of January and February. AS:VS was one of the grand prize winners of the 2010 Cellardoor Cinema Screenplay Contest (a contest that's about to get underway again--more details to come at the next MFS mixer) along with the movie Special (currently in post-production) written by Andrew Trent Fleming. Both films are great examples of the awesome independent film scene that Memphis currently has--and your support is needed to keep these, and other independent movies, going.

Due to scheduling conflicts at both locations that we normally host our monthly mixers, there will not be a December mixer. This is understandable since the holidays are underway and schedules have become tighter than ever! But never fear, the Winter Pitch Fest is still on and will happen and mixers will resume in January as we ramp up for the 2011 On Location Memphis International Film Festival.

Winners of the MCFC Sci-Fi Film Contest Announced

With the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention kicking off this Friday and Saturday (Nov 5 & 6), the winners of the MFS sponsored Sci-Fi and Fantasy Short Film Competition have been chosen. There were a total of thirteen films submitted for the contest--and each of them were fantastic in their own right.

It was a tight competition with lots of strong entries, but the judges have spoken:

Daylight Fades Appearing for One Week

The locally shot feature film Daylight Fades will be making a one week run at the Malco Paradiso theater starting this Friday, October 29. There will be four daily screenings of the film (1:05pm, 4:35pm, 7:25pm and 10:05pm) and tickets can be purchased in advance through the Malco theater website.

If you haven't had the chance to see this Memphis production, you don't know what you are missing; besides being a great film with high production value, this is a chance to see the work of local cast and crew in action. Support the local film scene by catching a screening of this movie; Malco has been instrumental in providing local filmmakers the opportunity to screen their works in a major theater and we all need for this trend to continue!

Indie Memphis Film Festival 13 - Preview

If you haven't purchased your pass yet for this year's installment of the Indie Memphis Film Festival, you better get on the ball! There's plenty of screenings to watch and events to attend. As is usually the case with film festivals, there's a lot going on, so we wanted to give you ten reasons to go purchase your tickets to this year's event!

1. Network opportunities. What do you do when you're waiting for a movie to start? You network. How about when you're having a drink at Studio on the Square between screenings? You network. It's one of the main reasons we go to festivals and there's plenty of it at Indie Memphis.

2. Support local film. Besides the fact that Indie Memphis is a local institution, there will be lots of work showcased within the program by Memphis filmmakers. Just check out the screenings of Open Five, The Grace Card and Craig Brewer's The Poor & Hungry.

3. Learn more about your craft. While you're networking, you will also be learning what's going on in the Memphis film scene, who is shooting what, etc. You can also attend a presentation by Kodak to get that definitive comparison of film vs. HD and to learn more about the medium.

4. Go Hollywood. Besides the opportunity to attend mixers, you can attend the Awards Ceremony to see who takes home the Indie Memphis version of the Oscars!

5. Catch some classics. It's well and good to see some of the hot, new movies coming from the independent film world, but it's always nice to see great, past films as well. During this year's fest, such screenings include Mystery Train, The Blues Brothers and Ed Wood.

6. Pitch your own project! Indie Memphis will be offering a pitch session at the Brooks Museum of Art. This is your chance to pitch your film idea to a seasoned group of reviewers.

7. Cutting edge cinema. See the edgy side of the independent film scene by catching screenings of Steven Soderberg's And Everything is Going Fine, Geoff Marslett's Mars and Aaron Katz's Cold Weather.

8. Meet your peers. With two 'Hometowner' programs being presented at the Brooks Museum of Art, the festival is a great way to meet others shooting movies around Memphis.

9. Expand your documentary horizons. The festival isn't just about narrative films; documentaries are showcased as well. Catch screenings of The Last Survivor, American Jihadist and the Documentaries in Action program.

10. It doesn't cost you a lot! You can buy individual tickets, but with everything that's going on, consider becoming an Indie Memphis member and/or purchasing a festival pass. All of this can be done at the Indie Memphis website.

1st Annual Winter Pitch Fest

Have you ever wanted to stand in front of a room full of producers to pitch your film script, treatment, trailer, idea, etc.? Well, now you will get your chance! The Memphis Film Society will be hosting the 1st Annual Winter Pitch Fest this November in lieu of our normal mixer/speaker. The event will be held at Raffe's Deli and Beergarden (date to be announced soon).

There will be three local judges on hand who will critique your pitch (on paper, for your eyes only) and ask follow-up questions about your pitch. Here are the guidelines for your pitch:

1. Pitches are limited to two minutes. In the industry, this is sometimes called the 'elevator pitch,' meaning you can actually get your entire pitch out to a producer while riding in an elevator! There will be a timer, so practice getting your pitch in at two minutes.

2. Pitchers are limited to two pitches. After you have pitched your first project, you will go back into the queue and get to do your second pitch when your turn comes back around. Beyond two pitches, no guarantees. If time permits, there may be the possibility for a third.

3. Pitchers are allowed three follow-up questions from the judges. Be prepared to answer additional questions about your plot, characters, etc.

4. Pitchers are allowed to use props within reason. By this, I mean you can use 'posters' or dress as a character, etc. No audio or video is allowed to assist you with your pitch, so no jamboxes, computers, televisions, etc.

5. You must own your idea, script, etc. You cannot pitch a 'spin-off' or sequel to a film, television program, comic book, etc. that you do not hold the copyright to.

Once the pitches are over, the event will continue as one of our normal mixers--something you should take advantage of so you can judge the strength of your project ideas, your pitching technique and to (possibly) get your project rolling! Since we will NOT be holding an October mixer (the Indie Memphis Film Festival will be in full swing during the period we would normally host a mixer) this will be the next Memphis Film Society event.

Tribeca Enterprises Brings Infidel to Memphis

Tribeca Enterprises, the driving force behind the Tribeca Film Festival, will be bringing the smash British comedy Infidel to Memphis' Malco Studio on the Square on September 10th. Here's a brief synopsis of the movie:

Meet Mahmud Nasir (Omid Djalili, Sex and the City 2), loving husband, doting father and something of a “relaxed” Muslim. He may not be the most observant, but in his heart he is a true Muslim. After his mother’s death, Mahmud finds his birth certificate, which reveals that not only was he adopted at birth…but he’s Jewish, and his real name is Solly Shimshillewitz! As Mahmud tumbles headlong into a full-scale identity crisis, the only person he can turn to is Lenny (Richard Schiff, The West Wing), a drunken Jewish cabbie. Soon Mahmud is embarking on lessons in Jewishness, starting with how to dance like Topol and the proper way to say “oy vey.” This revelation couldn’t come at a worse time, with Mahmud’s son about to marry the stepdaughter of a radical Muslim cleric. Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) and Matt Lucas (Little Britain) join the cast of this comedy of ethnic proportions.

It's rare that Memphians get treated to this type of movie, so let's make sure that Tribeca Enterprises thinks of us again in the future! Sci-Fi and Fantasty Film Competition

The Memphis Film Society is sponsoring a science fiction and fantasy short film competition for the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention (www.memphiscfc.com). The competition is open to filmmakers nationwide--though we definitely would like to see the bulk of the shorts coming from Memphis! Entering the competition is free and the top ten films (selected by viewers and a local board of filmmakers) will be featured in a program at the convention (as well as get a free pass to the event). The overall winner will even get a prize (to be announced later, but will be great!).

Entering the competition is easy:

1. Shoot your short film. It needs to be science fiction or fantasy in nature, ten minutes or less and not infringe upon any copyrights (Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, etc.). It needs to also conform to a PG-13 rating or safer--so no nudity, excessive profanity, etc.

2. Sign up for a Vimeo account (www.vimeo.com). Then upload your short film to Vimeo and request to add it to the official film competition channel (http://vimeo.com/channels/mcfc). There is a 'Shout Box' on the channel you can use to make your request to add your film to the channel (be sure to include the url to your short and to make your film 'public').

3. The week prior to the convention (dates for the convention are Nov. 5 and 6), winners will be announced.

It's that easy--and, again, it's completely free! If you have any issues uploading your film, getting it on the channel or simply have a question, contact us at info@memphisfilm.org and we'll get right back to you. Now go shoot that film!

June 2010 MFS Mixer, Brad Ellis

New Announcements: July 13

Winners of the Cellardoor Cinema Screenplay Contest have been announced. Drew Fleming's script Special was chosen along with Duane P. Craig's screenplay Severe. Fleming's script will be produced by the production company this September with Craig's film going into production in January 2011. Cellardoor Cinema has stated that this contest will be a yearly event so stay tuned for future contest announcements.

Old School Pictures has announced an encore performance of their new film, Daylight Fades. It will be hitting the big screen at Studio on the Square on Tuesday, July 20th with two performances (7pm and 9:25pm). Tickets may be purchased here and are selling for $9.99. This may be your last chance to catch this Memphis-made film in its home town so come out and support this local production! More details about the film, as well as ways to follow the movie, can be found on the Daylight Fades website.

Indie Memphis is now hosting their volunteer meetings/mixers. It's a great way to assist with the film festival, to learn more about local film production and to meet others in the film community. More information about these meetings can be found on the Indie Memphis website and on their Facebook page (you can link to it via the Indie Memphis website).

The Memphis Film Society mixer for July will be happening once again at Raffe's Beer Garden and Deli on Wednesday, July 28 (7-9pm). The speaker will be director Brad Ellis of Old School Pictures (Daylight Fades). The event is free and Raffe's will be offering great drink specials. Be sure to bring out your business cards, flyers for film events/casting and be ready for a great time!

MFS Industry Mixer Set for June

This month's Memphis Film Society Mixer will be held on Tuesday, June 29th (7-9 pm) at Celtic Crossing, 903 South Cooper Street (www.celticcrossingmemphis.com). The speaker will be Abby Elzemeyer, talent agent and founder of Elzemeyer Talent Agency (www.elzemeyertalentagency.com). Here's her bio from the ETA website:

ETA was started by native Memphian Abby Elzemeyer. Abby has been involved in the arts for many years as a model, actor, producer, talent agent, and casting director. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy high school in Michigan as a theater major and then moved to Denver, CO to work in the education department at the Denver Center for Performing Arts. For college Abby attended New York University, Tisch School of the Arts for theater where she studied the Meisner Technique under Vicki Hart. Cellardoor Cinema Screenplay Contest

The contest is free and the winner will get his/her screenplay produced into a finished product. The submission deadline for the contest is June 19th--and the finalists will be notified on June 26th. The winner of the competition will be announced on July 10th. Screenwriters should take note that the Memphis Film Society will be creating a special interest group just for you in the near future. The SIG will meet monthly to read a script then provide feedback/criticism to that screenwriter. After you attend three SIG meetings, you will then be able to submit your own script for a reading. Pretty neat! It's a great way to hear your script read aloud (believe me, you'll be surprised at what suddenly sounds cliched or just plain bad) and to meet other screenwriters--and it's free! Producer Ryan Watt Speaks to an Eager Audience

Last night's Memphis Film Society mixer was a huge success. With over a hundred film enthusiasts turning out for the event, not only did we all get to meet-and-greet with a lot of folks, but we brought some well-deserved business to Raffe's Deli and Beergarden (thanks for letting us have our mixer there!). Local producer Ryan Watt spoke about his work as a producer and explained how other Memphians can do what he does. It was a very informative presentation that will hopefully help fuel some new independent film projects in town.

We also got to hear about some great film events going on around Memphis--such as the Indie Memphis Global Lens series screenings, an upcoming FABA event and a screenplay contest where the winner gets his/her script made into a movie (more information about this can be found at www.cellardoorcinema.com/contest). We even had a pop-in appearance by Sharon O'Guin of the Memphis and Shelby County Film Commission. It was, all in all, a great evening. But now all eyes are on June...

The next Memphis Film Society Mixer will be held on Tuesday, June 29 at Celtic Crossing (903 South Cooper Street) from 7-9 pm. The speaker will be local talent agent Abby Elzemeyer. Abby is the founder of the Elzemeyer Talent Agency (www.elzemeyertalentagency.com) and has worked in Memphis for years as a talent agent and casting director. This will be a definite must-attend event for all of you actors out there! It will also be a great opportunity for producers and directors to get first hand information about casting in Memphis.

MFS Industry Mixer-May 26

The first of our monthly film industry mixers is now set: We will gather on Wednesday, May 26 at Raffe's Deli and Beer Garden (3358 Poplar Avenue). The mixer begins at 7pm and will continue to 9pm (or longer if people decide to hang around--hey, it is a beer garden after all!), so there's no excuse to not coming out after work! Raffe's will be offering a selection of discounted beers during the event (just $2.50!) and they feature a top notch menu that will also be available.

The mixer will offer the opportunity for actors, crew and filmmakers in the Memphis independent film scene to meet, greet and exchange contact information. To this effect, we will offer a table for cast/crew calls, business cards, event flyers, etc.

There will also be a featured speaker at the mixer who will provide attendees with a valuable opportunity to learn more about shooting movies in Memphis, as well as offer you the chance to ask your own questions. This month's speaker will be Ryan Watt. Here's the official scoop on Ryan:

RYAN WATT (Producer) co-founded PAPER MOON FILMS, a Memphis-based film production company recently premiering OPEN FIVE and HOLY LAND by Kentucker Audley on the festival circuit and currently developing THE ROMANCE OF LONELINESS among other projects. Ryan is the Executive Producer of DAYLIGHT FADES, the latest feature film by OLD SCHOOL PICTURES, releasing this summer in Memphis and he serves as the Director of Marketing at NEW SCHOOL MEDIA GROUP, specializing in marketing solutions that utilize video and audio production.

This is the first program for the Memphis Film Society (several more will be kicking off in the near future), so come on out and support this unique organization so we can continue to have successful monthly mixers throughout the year. Shooting Your DSLR Film

When it comes to 'how do I...' questions, the latest hot topic concerns shooting movies with DSLR cameras. For those who are not still photographers, you may not even know what a DSLR camera is, much less how to shoot a movie with one. I hope this article will answer a few of the questions concerning these cameras--and supply you with a quick primer on shooting a movie using such a camera.

DSLR stands for 'Digital Single Lens Reflex.' All this really means to us as filmmakers is that it is a professional level camera that shoots digital images. A short while back, photo/video journalists started clamoring for a DSLR camera that could shoot quality web-ready video. The industry responded with several notable cameras: The Canon 5D ($3299), 7D ($1799) and 1D Mark IV ($5399), as well as the Panasonic DMC-GH1 ($1399) and the Nikon D90 ($1000). All of these cameras shoot various quality HD video--though not all of them shoot the same frame rates or use the same codex/compression. In this lot, the Canon 7D and 5D are the clear winners, as well as the most popular--mostly due to their versatility in frame rates (the 1D Mark IV is so expensive it kind of priced itself out of popularity).

But now Canon has introduced the T2i Rebel camera ($999.00)--also known as the Canon 550D in some parts--bringing the realm of DSLR filmmaking to those with a limited budget. With such a decrease in price from the 5D and 7D it begs the question, 'Does it shoot comparable footage to the other, higher priced, models?' In short, yes it does. In fact, the video footage from the T2i is almost indistinguishable from that of the other models. The decrease in price is actually due to significantly less options for the STILL photographer--primarily the lack of a second sensor that allows the 7D/5D to shoot at faster frame rates. But, again, this is for still photographers. If you are a big still photographer, in addition to videographer, you may want to consider the higher end cameras. But for us shooting HD video, the Canon T2i Rebel represents the best value (currently) on the market. It even has a couple advantages to the higher end cameras...

First off, the T2i only has one sensor to deal with; the 7D is notorious for overheating during shooting--and this is because of two sensors that are operating concurrently. The T2i also offers the most popular shooting rates for filmmakers right out of the box (24/25/30 fps at 1080p and 50/60 fps at 720p); the Canon 5D has only just updated their firmware to perform 24p shooting--and folks are complaining that this firmware is inherently buggy. The T2i also has some great presets on the selector knob and offers an autofocus feature while shooting video (just press the shutter button halfway).

So, essentially, you are getting the first TRUE DSLR that's been aimed at filmmakers, rather than a DSLR that's for still photographers and happens to have great video. Much like the 5D and 7D, the T2i still accepts the full range of Canon lenses and even sports a stereo mic input like the 7D (though this is only good, possibly, for interviews using an external boom/lav mic). So what are the limitations to shooting your movie with a DSLR camera?

First off, though you may snag a camera with one lens for the prices quoted above (all gotten from Amazon.com, BTW), there will be the additional expenses of add-on lenses to get the sweet, shallow depth-of-field that makes our movies look so wonderfully film-like. You may also want to buy an aftermarket camera mount with a pull focus knob/matte box to enhance your shooting as well, which can also be pricey. But, perhaps, the most significant drawback to shooting with a DSLR is the sound issue. You will have to shoot external sound using a quality audio recorder (such as the Zoom H2, Zoom H4 or Edirol R-09) and boom mic, then sync it up to your video footage. Of course, this is nothing new to those shooting with film cameras and it gives you a great excuse to familiarize yourself with using a slate.

You are also limited in the length of time for a shot. The file size for the T2i (as well as the 7D and 5D) is limited to 4GB. This is about 12 minutes or so of footage. Practically speaking, this is fine for most filmmakers, but if you're going to shoot long, one-take video (such as a wedding) you may want to go ahead and get a good video camera. All in all, though, these are limitations that have been tackled by those shooting on film many years ago (and in the end, you are wanting your movie to look like it was shot on film, right?).

So I hope this answers a lot of the questions that you may have concerning the use of a DSLR camera for your movie. Pick up a Canon T2i with a nice additional/shallow focus lens, a Zoom H2 and boom mic and you have a nice package for about $1500 that competes with high end HD cameras (compare that to the cost of even renting a Red camera package). After hosting a successful volunteer meeting for the Memphis Film Society at Celtic Crossing, expect to see several things in the near future:

1. Monthly Film Mixers. We've been talking about them for some time--and planning them as well. Next month they become reality. Starting in May, MFS will host a FREE monthly mixer for actors, crew and filmmakers in the Memphis area. Each mixer will feature a speaker that will provide attendees a chance to get some good info about working in Memphis, as well as offer an open-mic session for everyone to solicit help with their current project from the community. Of course, there will also be ample time for schmoozing with everyone as well...

2. MFS Fundraiser. Though this won't happen until late June or early July, we want to start talking about this now! We plan to host an event that will feature live music, free beer and the opportunity to once again mix it up with others in the film community. Price to attend will be extremely low, so there will be no excuse to miss this event. Plus, you'll be directly contributing to the creation of our second major program...

3. Guerilla Filmmaker Program. We plan to use the funds we raise during the fundraiser and in the near future to purchase a camera and lights package that will be made available to the Memphis film community for FREE to shoot their movie. An independent, local panel will select recipients of the gear and the filmmaker will get the camera and lights packages for up to 90 days for FREE.

Though there will be other programs in the near future from MFS, these are the biggies. Last Call for University of Memphis Film Class

Learn how to write, plan and shoot your short or feature film with Rich Newman at the University of Memphis. It's a two day 'Guerilla Filmmaking' class that's scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, January 23-24. Students get hands-on information for developing their screenplay, planning their shoot and directing their project.

Additional class subjects include lighting, staging and blocking shots, directing actors and dealing with post production. You will also learn about contracts and marketing your finished product so that your film will be a success.

Rich has read scripts for film festivals, worked on four major films and produced/directed his own feature film. Sign up for the class at the University of Memphis' Continuing Education website.

Call for Volunteers

2010 represents a whole new challenge--as well as a whole new makeover--for the Memphis Film Society. At the present we have hosted the occassional film industry mixer (some open, some private) and offered mentoring services when requested. This year we want to not only make both of these our primary mission, but to create mixers on a regular (monthly) basis and offer several new programs that will directly assist independent, low budget filmmakers in Memphis finish their projects.

To accomplish all of this, we will need volunteers. Primarily, we need 1-2 outgoing personalities to plan and organize events for MFS. A knowledge of fundraising would be a plus, but isn't completely necessary. In addition to those folks, we could also use a core group of 3-5 volunteers to assist with hosting these events, as well as helping coordinate our filmmaker assistance programs.

In addition to the monthly mixers, we hope to have a program in place to provide filmmakers with camera and light gear that can be used for 60-day periods (through an application process) and to have a one-on-one mentoring program that will allow people working in the Memphis' film scene to get advice from professionals in their field.

It's Day 2 of the festival and things are rolling in high gear. Yesterday opened with two great movies, followed by a chance to mix it up at an afterparty at The Vine. Predictably, all of these events were packed! If you are planning to see any screenings at the 2009 Indie Memphis Film Festival, go online and get your tickets now! As all of you know, the 2009 Indie Memphis Film Festival is kicking off this evening with a free exhibition and reception at the Marshall Arts center (5pm). The event features the war photography of Robert King, the music of Jonathan Kirkscey and serves as a preview for this year's opening night documentary, Shooting Robert King (screening Thu, Oct 8 at 7:15pm and 9:45pm).

If you aren't sure about attending this year's festival, come out for this event (it's free!) and be convinced! This year's festival features great screenings, unique networking opportunities and the chance to learn about film direction from mumblecore luminary Joe Swanberg (you can also catch one of Swanberg's newest films, Alexander the Last, at the festival)!

Other key screenings at this year's festival include the recently added Paranormal Activity (can you say, 'Thank you, Craig Brewer?'), a work-in-progress screening of Kentucky Audley's new film (as well as the trailer for his upcoming movie Open Five) and That Evening Sun (the opening night narrative feature). New Batch of Indy Filmmakers

The Guerilla Filmmaking class held at the University of Memphis wrapped last weekend and was a success. Students spent two days of intensive education focusing on developing, producing and marketing their independent films. Students of the class included Thomas Pilgrim, Stephanie Langner, Ryan Hartley, Timothy Sparacello, James Blaisdell, Lionel Quinn and Glenn McDonald.

The Guerilla Filmmaking course will be offered again during the Spring 2010 semester. Stay tuned to this website, or the University of Memphis Continuing Education website for specific dates.

In other news, the Memphis Film Society monthly mixers will be kicking off again in October. Exact date and location will be announced next week. Much like the original mixers offered by MFS, the evening will open with a featured speaker (a local luminary of the film industry), followed by a couple hours of mixing. Come out and meet others in the local film community. These mixers are a great opportunity for producers/directors to meet potential future cast/crew members and vice versa. Guerilla Filmmaking Class This Weekend. Visit the University of Memphis' Professional & Continuing Education website to sign up for a Guerilla Filmmaking class with Rich Newman. The class covers all aspects of pre-production, production and post-production under the constraints of an extremely low budget. The course is two days long (Saturday and Sunday, Sep 19/20) and only costs $99.00. You will leave this class with clear guidance for shooting your feature or short film.

Cigarette Girl Premiere

Support local filmmakers by purchasing your ticket to the official Memphis premiere of Mike McCarthy's new film Cigarette Girl. Your $12 ticket will get you a seat at the movie, as well as into the official afterparty at Nocturnal. The screening takes place on September 10th at Malco's Studio on the Square.

Here's the official synopsis of the film:

A STORY FOR QUITTERS In the near future laws against smoking have increased to the point where you must live in a certain part of town called the SMOKING SECTION if want to smoke cigarettes. Once you have passed the line of demarcation you just know you've crossed the tracks because things get a little grimier, a little more industrial. The sky is a little blacker. The mood is heavier. Someone might get hurt. Cigarettes now cost $63.49 a pack, yet the money derived from this tax obviously isn't going toward this dystopian corner of the city. If you travel there to smoke or to buy (because it is also illegal to buy on the 'clean' side of town) there are several options, but the main place is the VICE CLUB. There you will find old fashion Cigarette Girls like our heroine with no name. The VICE CLUB was actually a cigarette factory built in 1935 and designed by the very best deco influenced architects. The original owners even installed a giant 50 foot long IRON cigarette on top of the building that tipped into an gigantic ashtray. One hundred years later that cigarette is cancer coated with rust but still tilts back and forth - if the wind is strong enough, making a horrible squeak on it's axis that is heard through out the city. Cigarette Girl becomes an angel of death when she stops smoking and starts killing on the third day to alleviate her acute psychological withdrawal manifested primarily by the ghost of a cowboy who is always on her back to keep smoking. Cigarette Girl would rather kill than smoke. Written by John Michael McCarthy.

Guerilla Filmmaking Course

As part of the University of Memphis' Continuing Education program, Memphis Film Society's Rich Newman will be instructing a course this summer on Guerilla Filmmaking. The class is open to the general public--including high school students--and will be taught over two consecutive weekends in June.

Students of the Guerilla Filmmaking class will spend the first weekend going over every aspect of movie making, including screenwriting, pre-production, and production (all from the point of view of a low-budget project). Students will then be responsible for developing and shooting a short film over the next week--all with the guidance of the instructor.

The second weekend will focus on marketing, finance, and distribution of independent movies--and give students a chance to discuss what went right and wrong during the production of the short films over the last week. The weekend will end by screening the completed shorts.

In addition to the knowledge and experience gained over the course of the two weekends, participants will also walk away with a mini-guide for a complete guerilla production manual and hopefully a completed short film that's ready for the festival circuit. The class costs $249.00 and includes all the materials and tools needed for completion of the course. You can download the Summer Catalog for the University of Memphis and sign up for the class when registration opens on May 15th. Class registration is limited to a small amount of students due to the shooting/screening of films so don't wait too long to register!

Indie Memphis is sponsoring the premiere of Craig Brewer's $5 Cover at the Malco Paradiso on Thursday, April 30 (check out the video below of Craig promoting the musicians of $5 Cover at the 2009 SXSW Music Festival--you can see more videos at Brewer's YouTube channel: MyBrewTube).

The screening will feature the entire 15-episode series that will hit MTV sometime this year. There will be four screenings of the series and tickets can be purchased in advance at the Indie Memphis website. Though tickets will be also offered at the door at the event, this is a set of screenings that will most likely sell out in advance, so you will probably want to get your tix in advance. The price is $10 and proceeds will benefit Indie Memphis. The screening is being sponsored by Malco Theatres and the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission.

In other news, the Memphis Film Society and Rich Newman will be hosting a Guerilla Filmmaking class at the University of Memphis early this summer. The course will be presented as part of U of M's Professional and Continuing Education program. The course is taught over two consecutive weekends and will allow students to write, direct and edit a short film. Once the course has ended, a screening of the completed shorts will be hosted for the participants and presented to the public (location to be determined). 2009 Oxford Film Festival

Well, it's official: The Oxford Film Festival has made their festival selections and the countdown begins. Scheduled this year from Feb 5-8, the festival is in its sixth year of operation and promises to be the best yet. In years past, Memphis filmmakers have done well in Oxford and the contributions of this festival to the area are significant.

Also, there's plenty to do in Oxford at this festival; never mind the screenings, panels, and events--you have to visit some of the area's best restaurants/bars to fully appreciate the nightlife in this town. I recommend City Grocery and the Library for tons of fun. Stay tuned to the Memphis Film Society website for complete coverage of the festival, as well as tips regarding networking at this year's event.

The Memphis Film Society will also be visiting Austin, Texas this year for the SXSW Film Festival and meeting with the Austin Film Society about a possible partnership for future screenings and events in Memphis. Stay tuned as these are announced in the near future. Right now, MFS is simply a loose collection of local talent, crew, and production companies, but in the near future we will become more formal and you will see more programs coming out of this organization.

One day down and I'm still stoked! Yesterday was the premier of Delta Rising and I enjoyed it very much. As a pure documentary, I wanted a little more from it, but as an ode to Clarksdale it was right on the money. The afterparty at Ground Zero was great as well. Good music, good booze. Looks like GZ will be pretty much like its Clarksdale counterpart once it gets up and running for the general public.

So today is Day 2 and I'm up and on schedule. I made an effort not to get too wiped out on the first day at the party and it has paid off. After all, I'm still recovering from SXSW in Austin. I'll be hitting Young Ave Deli for a warmup before catching everything on my slate. Since the rest of the festival is pretty much in Midtown, I'll be setting up shop in Otherlands to do work on my lappy, getting my food fix at Soulfish, and grabbing the occasional pint at Celtic Crossing. It's all about the lay of the land...

Memphis International Film Festival is Here!

It's been a while...a long while actually...since I was able to focus on Memphis, the local film scene, and (of course) the Memphis Film Society. Those days of lounging are no more, however. After long last, the various paper-based intricacies of setting up a non-profit have been resolved and now I can actually DO SOMETHING. Alas, it all happened too late for MFS to get involved with this year's Memphis International Film Festival, but that's okay. It looks like this year's slate is going to rock!

That said, here's my schedule and picks for this year's festival. You'll note that I don't have films listed for every time slot--this is so I can 'play the field' a bit on choices and leave a little slack in my schedule for glad-handing and networking.

Thursday:
7:30pm Delta Rising. The first of my documentary picks. Looks to be a good one, too.
Party at the new Ground Zero Blues Club. Never pass up the chance to network...

Friday:
6:00pm Panel: Visual FX. An interesting subject and the only panel not about 'making it.'
6:30pm Shorts Program. Always love watching shorts.
Party at Ernestine's and Hazel's.

Saturday:
10:00am Panel: Making it in Hollywood. Hmm...
11:30am Panel: Making it in Tennessee. More relevant...
2:00pm Panel: Making it With Your Friends. Most doable...
2:45pm Beyond the Call. More documentary.
5:00pm Before the Music Dies. Last documentary for me--an Austin fave film.

9:50 Lynch Part 1. Glad to see 'ole Dave is being featured so prominently at this year's fest.

Sunday:
5:30 Shorts Program.
8:00pm Lynch Part 2/Inland Empire. My only gripe for this festival: Why schedule two Lynch-based films at the same time? Now fans have to choose between seeing the second half of the doc they started on Saturday, or watching a truly indy-made feature (all shot using $1000 Sony PD-150 DV cameras) by a living legend.

1. Indie Memphis Film Festival. The 2007 Soul of Southern Film festival will be held at the Malco Studio on the Square theatre Oct 19-25 and features several locally produced productions. You can purchase individual tickets to shows for $8.50 or pick up a Six Pack ($40) or festival pass ($70 in advance, $80 at door) at the theatre (2105 Court Street).

2. MFS Mixer. To kick off the festival unofficially, the Memphis Film Society will be hosting a mixer. Like our other mixers, this is a great opportunity for local filmmakers and producers to meet with actors, agencies, and vendors in the Memphis film community. Specifics about the mixer will be released in the next few days; we still have not decided on a venue (if you have suggestions, feel free to email them to us at info@memphisfilm.org).

3. Colors Agency Acting Classes. Colors Agency has announced their fall schedule for classes. They will be offering a Basic Acting for Film and Television course (10 weeks) and a class on Intermediate Scene Study (6 weeks). For more information, contact Colors Agency at 901-726-9300.

4. Memphis International Film Festival Update. Today is the deadline for submitting your film to MIFF 2008 (March 27-30). However the deadline for entering the music video competition has been extended to Oct 31. More information regarding submissions and deadlines can be found at the MIFF website: www.memphisfilmforum.org

5. SAGINdie Memphis Signatory Workshop. Are you considering producing your own film? Plan to attend this workshop presented by the Screen Actors' Guild and SAGIndie. This presentation will explain SAG's various low-budget agreements and walk you through the process of signing an agreement from start to finish. The workshop is free and open to all. Malco Studio on the Square, 12-1pm, Oct 21.

6. Nothing But the Truth Casting. The film will be accepting headshots and resumes for various extra roles throughout shooting. These can be sent to:

1. ZoMBiEz!! has been selected for the 10th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival. It is scheduled to screen on Sunday, Oct 21 @ 5:15pm and on Wednesday, Oct 24 @ 1:10pm at Malco's Studio on the Square. Lets pack the house and have a laugh! Invite everyone you know. Pass this on and tell all your friends.

2. Volunteer Call for Indie Memphis. Indie Memphis wants you to volunteer to work at this year's film festival. Volunteers are wanted Oct 19-25. Shifts are two hours long and volunteers get a screening pass per shift worked, along with a nifty t-shirt. Interested parties should contact alisainmemphis@comcast.net with info and availability.

Memphis Film Society Is Official

After months of organizing, re-organizing, and working with the local legal eagles, the Memphis Film Society is now a formal 501(c) non-profit organization. What does this mean? It means that MFS will be able to provide more services to you, the Memphis film community.

That said, September 2007 will be the big rollout month for us. Here's what to expect for September and beyond...

Monthly Mixers. After our 'test' mixer last March, we realized this would be a great opportunity for members of the community to meet and greet with each other in a 'low pressure' environment. It was also great for everyone to meet the powers-that-be behind the Memphis International Film Festival! Starting September, MFS will be hosting regular monthly mixers with our partner Celtic Crossing in Midtown.

Memphis Moving Pictures. As part of our first purchase as a non-profit, we managed to get a theatre quality digital projector and portable screen system. So, September will kick off our newest program: Memphis Moving Pictures. Every month we will be hosting unique screenings of films in unique settings. Imagine watching Jaws while swimming in a lake, or Friday the 13th in the middle of the woods! In addition to these types of fun screenings, we will also be featuring the works of local producers/directors.

Workshops. One great asset MFS had from the get-go was contacts. And what good are contacts if we don't use them? We will be hosting regular workshops focusing on training local crew members and providing them with the tools they will need to get into the local union. We will also be bringing in instructors to work with local actors as well.

Weekly Newsletter. Members of MFS will receive a weekly e-zine that will list local/national film news, cast/crew calls, and film events that will be happening around Memphis. You'll never miss an important casting call again with our help.

Other programs will follow as we get our office up and rolling: A grant program, annual gala, and members only discounts with local film service providers just for a start! Stay tuned in August for our official rollout e-zine.

Film Mixer Successful!

With a turnout of 100+ for our first film mixer, we are more than pleased here at the Memphis Film Society. With a crowd that included actors, gaffers, directors, talent agents, casting agents, and local resources, the Network Memphis Film Mixer at Celtic Crossing was a great success.

We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to come out and support local, Memphis film by attending the mixer and purchasing passes for the Memphis International Film Festival. Next month's mix should prove to be even bigger and better. With a scheduled speaker, free swag, plenty of networking opportunities, and a night of awesome food and drink at Celtic Crossing, the April mix will satisfy everyone.

Stay tuned for more info regarding the next mix, as well as our first Memphis Film Society screening that should be hitting next month. And it won't be just any screening...how about a screening with the filmmaker in attendance, food and drinks, and giveaways? More info will be coming soon...

1st Ever Network Memphis Film Mixer

The Memphis Film Society is proud to announce that the first of our monthly programs will be rolling out this month! The 1st Network Memphis Film Mixer will be held on March 21, 6pm at the Celtic Crossing Irish pub (903 South Cooper) in the Outdoor patio area. This is the day before the Memphis International Film Festival kicks off--so use this mixer as a chance to make contacts, plan your schedule, and organize!

In addition to networking with other local filmmakers, actors, and film crew, the Memphis Film Forum will be on hand to sell advance tickets and passes to the 8th Annual Memphis International Film Festival.

The Celtic Crossing will be offering drink specials, great food at a great price, and a night of trivia competition after the mixer as well, so lets get the word out about this event!

Welcome!

This is the beginner site for the Memphis Film Society. My name is Rich Newman and I'm in the process of setting up this organization. I will be updating this site with new information over the next few months as things develop. The MFS will be for filmmakers, film enthusiasts, and industry professionals involved with the Memphis film scene--this includes actors!

In addition to hosting monthly mixers and screenings, the Society will also be setting up a filmmaker's grant program, a local short film festival, and setting up a small studio in Memphis that filmmakers can use for screenings, dailies, casting calls, production meetings, etc.--though all of this may be a couple years down the line!

I'm very excited to be a part of Memphis' film scene, and I look forward to meeting everyone in the Memphis film industry at our first mixer in March 2007. Stay tuned as the organization gets off the ground, and we start accepting memberships/sponsorships.
